All Ground Flat Stock is 100% free of decarburization on all
six sides and can be heat treated immediately without further metal removal. Thickness and width are horizontally ground to a
maximum finish of 35 Ra.
All tool steel analysis (O-1, A-2, A-6, D-2, S-7, & M-2) are
supplied in the annealed steel condition. Close control assures complete spheroidization throughout. The low-carbon analysis
(Low Carbon) is supplied with pearlitic microstructure. Our new prehardened grade (4142) is made from alloy steel & prehardened
to Rc 28-32.
All Ground Flat Stock is produced from cross-rolled sheet or plate, assuring a more homogeneous structure and finer grain size than other types. Furthermore, the cross-rolling process significantly enhances toughness of the product and increase tensile strength in the transverse direction.
All ends of Ground Flat Stock are precisely cut and deburred to insure excellent yields and handling safety. Thickness 3/16" and up are cold sawed, while lighter sections are sheared.
A-6 AIR HARDENING
This Ground Flat Stock is a fine grained, superior quality, electric furnace, low temperature, air hardening tool steel. It is a balanced combination of carbon, manganese, chromium and molybdenum resulting in an improved type of air-hardening die steel. It retains
its air hardening characteristics even though it is in the
"free-machining" class. A-6 is capable of being hardened from a
low temperature such as was formerly restricted to many of the
oil hardening grades. Except for extremely large sections, full
hardness throughout may be expected.
